Utilities companies face staff health backlash

Monday, June 22nd, 2015

worker bad back 150150Back injuries caused by lifting and moving traditional metal or concrete manhole covers is a real health concern that costs utility companies, across the world, significant worker compensation claims.

Indeed, a recent fact sheet issued by the League of Minnesota Cities in the US says that less than 10% of the US male population has the physical ability to manually move a manhole cover safely.

Facing similar concerns in the UK, United Utilities’ Cover and Frame Manager, Sammy Nelson, contacted us, to participate in an extended trial programme to evaluate the benefits of switching some of their heavier covers to lightweight, composite access covers, to replace conventional ductile-iron or steel-and-concrete covers.

We of course supplied our patented and trademarked Thrubeam cover design. It combines a proprietary, prefabricated dry fiberglass reinforcement, which incorporates composite stiffening “beams,” in a resin transfer moulding (RTM) process. The moulded covers exhibit high strength-to-weight and the typical surface details and required non-slip finish.

A real game changer in cover locking technology

The DS6 with pressure release locking mechanism allows water to escape but stays safely in position during a flood surge. Puts an end to the dangers caused by covers that stick up or explode out of the ground and means no holes for pedestrians or motorists to fall into during times of flood.

It’s a square D400 product with a 600x600mm clear opening and can be used where there is high speed traffic, specifically for Group 4 applications as defined in the EN124:1994 standards.
